American Legion Makes Generous Donation of $11,500 in New Shoes

Last month, the American Legion provided a generous donation of hundreds of pairs of new shoes (totaling a value of $11,500) to our 2024 'Walk In Their Footsteps' New Boots & Shoes Campaign that supports homeless, low-income, disabled, and underserved military veterans in the D.C. area.

Washington, D.C. American Legion Post #46 Commander W. Marcus Bowers and Department Commander of the District of Columbia American Legion Detashia Coleman accepted the recommendation of Legionnaire Christopher Herndon to support a grant proposal for this substantial donation to our new shoes campaign.

The campaign concluded with the new shoes gifted to veterans in need at the  2024 Veterans Affairs Medical Center (VAMC) Winterhaven/Stand Down on November 2.

The American Legion National Executive Director of Government Affairs Mario A. Marquez, Director of National Veterans Employment & Education Joseph C. Sharpe, and Employment & Education Policy Associate Tyra Nelson were kindly on hand to assist in distributing new shoes at the event.

The 'Walk In Their Footsteps' New Boots & Shoes collection began in 2009 when a group of veterans working at the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) Veterans Affinity Group organized an effort to assist in eliminating military veteran homelessness in America. For the past fifteen years the 'Walk In Their Footsteps' New Boots and Shoes campaign has supported the Washington, DC VAMC Annual Winterhaven/Stand Down and donated thousands of new boots and shoes to struggling veterans.
